How illusory and misleading Time may be. When we think we have it trapped and subjugated, it vanishes and slips like water between our fingers. Nothing can stop or cloister this silent dimension that passes inexorably and corrodes everything in its path.

When we are born, we automatically begin a countdown that will inevitably lead us to the end of our earthly existence. The longer we live, the less we have left. This, far from being a pessimistic vision, is simply the reflection of a truth that allows us to see life from a better perspective, helping us to put our priorities in order and to distinguish the important from the superfluous.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom».

Psalm 90:12

When we recognize our temporary condition and the incredible fragility of our bodies, we begin to value transcendental and invisible things more than material and ephemeral ones. We understand it is foolish to base our happiness on passing youth or withering beauty. We realize that it is more important to leave a legacy in people than an inheritance in pockets. In short, we add more wisdom to our hearts.

We don’t need to go through a life-or-death situation to start valuing and investing more in people and our relationships. We do not need to go through an extreme situation to decide to undertake the dreams that were planted in our hearts. Many people, whose bodies lie in cemeteries, had plans for next week and projects for next year. Therefore, it is imperative to leave behind the unalterable past and enjoy the gift of the present. That is why we call it present because it is a gift.

As long as you have life, Live!

Time is money

«Time is money». This is one of the most unfair comparisons I’ve ever heard, and I’m not saying it because of money but because of time. The truth is that all the money in the world could not pay for a single hour of life. Neither the best doctors nor the most advanced technologies have the power to prevent the breath of life that sustains us from vanishing. Unfortunately, many come to this conclusion when it’s too late.

There is no man who hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit, neither hath he power in the day of death. And there is no discharge in that war, neither shall wickedness deliver those who are given to it».

Ecclesiastes 8:8

According to Ecclesiastes book, «It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living will lay it to his heart.»(a) Moments of mourning lead us to meditate and to admit, even if only for a few minutes, that we are not as strong as we thought and that it is not worth wasting time in anguish, worries, dissensions, and vain discussions..

We have accompanied countless families in those moments of pain and separation, and we have seen how many lament the hugs that were not given, the expressions of love that were denied, and the forgiveness that was not granted. But we have also contemplated, with joy and satisfaction, the contentment and peace of those who gave themselves permission to love and kiss their loved ones. Those who, despite what they experienced, were able to forgive and leave behind the past that kept them confined in the prison of rancor and bitterness. To decide not to forgive is to decide to suffer. When you pardon, you let a prisoner go free, and that prisoner could be yourself.

Forbearing one another and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against another: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.»

Colossians 3:13

Was I really that dumb?

How painful it would be to have to admit that we have missed out on opportunities to spend time with our family and friends, ignoring that the moments are unrepeatable and that people will not always be with us, due to the natural passage of life.

How many times have we sat around a table without looking into each other’s eyes and without enjoying the moment, captivated by the attractiveness and seduction of social networks and the media? It seems that we have not understood how valuable our time is; something that the owners of the media have done and that is why they are monetizing it.

Who has cajoled and deceived us, in such a way, that they have convinced us to exchange the warmth of a close conversation and tender smiles, for the cold and distant of LED screens? Who has persuaded us to exchange the preciousness of life for mere mirages?

We need to have our moments of distraction and recreation, but it is essential that we give each thing its value and time.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15-16

The right time

Typically, we measure time using physical and quantitative metrics. But from this point on, I want to talk about it in terms of its opportunities and occasions, and to do so, I will talk about the Kairos.

The Kairos tells us of the favorable moment, the opportunity, the point at which things «come to a head» (so that the most can be made). It means the right time (b). Everything has its Kairos, «For everything, there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven» (c).

I believe that the moment has arrived for us to accept our Creator and God and start living out the purpose for which He made us. It is time to believe and have faith because we could enjoy a long life and accumulate abundant goods, but if we do not come to know the One who created and called us with purpose, our passage on this earth would be futile. It would be of no use to us to gain the whole world if we lose our soul.

Dear ones believe it or not, we all have eternity ahead of us, and choosing how to spend it is the most important decision we will ever make in life. For this reason, the Scripture states: “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts» (d). Today is the day to decide for God and Jesus Christ. Tomorrow could be too late.

Behold, now is the accepted time! Behold, now is the day of salvation!
